VPK Paperwork Checklist for St. Lucie County Families

By My First Place Academy · Port St. Lucie, FL · October 31, 2026

Four-year-old and VPK classroom at My First Place Academy

VPK paperwork is easier when you start early. Expect to gather proof of your child's age, proof of residency and some health records. Confirm the current-year details with the Early Learning Coalition before you begin.

Our frequently asked questions cover common enrollment questions. This checklist walks you through the paperwork one step at a time, so nothing gets missed.

What VPK is

VPK is the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program. VPK is free to eligible Florida four-year-olds. It is offered through a partnership with the Early Learning Coalition. Eligibility rules and dates are set by the coalition, and they can change from year to year.

Take a moment to check whether your child is eligible before you gather anything. That small step can save time later.

Step 1: Gather proof of your child's age

Most programs ask for an official birth record, such as a birth certificate. Keep the original in a safe place and make copies for your files. Check that the name on the record matches the name you will use for enrollment. A small spelling difference can cause delays.

If you are not sure which record is accepted, ask the coalition or the program before you send anything.

Step 2: Gather proof of Florida residency

Proof of residency usually means documents that show your home address. Many parents use utility bills, lease agreements or mortgage statements. Ask the coalition which documents they accept this year, since the list can change.

Make sure the address on your documents matches the address you give on your application. Consistent details make the process smoother for everyone.

Step 3: Gather health and immunization records

Early learning programs often ask for health records. Ask your program which forms they need and when they need them. Your child's doctor can help you gather the right records.

We cannot give medical advice. If you have questions about your child's health or vaccines, please talk with your child's doctor first.

Step 4: Get the certificate of eligibility

The certificate of eligibility shows that your child qualifies for VPK. You apply through the Early Learning Coalition. Once you receive it, keep a copy with your other paperwork. Ask how long the approval stays valid and what you need to do to use it.

Read every notice from the coalition carefully. Missing a deadline can slow down your child's enrollment.

Step 5: Choose your program and enroll

Once your paperwork is ready, choose a VPK program that fits your family. Ask about hours, classroom setup and daily routines. Ask how the program shares news with families, too.

Many parents also want a bilingual setting. Our classrooms are bilingual English-Spanish immersion, from infant care through VPK. We are open Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 6:00pm.

Why applying early helps

Early applications give you more time to gather records and compare programs. They also leave room to fix any issues before the school year starts. Do not assume last year's dates or rules still apply. Check the current-year details with the coalition, then plan your steps around them.

Your VPK paperwork checklist

  • Your child's birth record, original and copies
  • Proof of Florida residency, with the address that matches your application
  • Health and immunization records your program requests
  • Your VPK certificate of eligibility or confirmation of your application
  • Emergency contact details for at least two adults
  • A list of adults authorized to pick up your child

Keep these items in one folder. A single place for records makes each new form easier to fill out.

Questions to ask the program

  • What paperwork do you need from me, and by what date?
  • What are your daily hours and drop-off routine?
  • How do you handle a child who is slow to settle in?
  • How will you share updates about my child's day?
  • What safety features do you have on site?

What to look for at a tour

Parents are welcome to tour. Our open-door policy invites visits, so you can see the classrooms for yourself. Look at how staff talk with children and how the rooms are set up for play and rest.

Ask about the safety features too. Our premises are video-monitored, and classrooms are connected by a closed-circuit intercom. We also have private parking and a synthetic-turf playground. Sign language is used with infants and toddlers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until the last week to gather records
  • Using an old address on residency papers
  • Assuming last year's dates still apply
  • Losing the original birth record
  • Skipping the question about health forms
